What is remission?
« on: June 29, 2009, 06:35:39 AM »
Hi, I am new here and glad to have found you despite my already long disease history of 15 years (but only 4 attacks that were horrible). I am now supposedly in remission but what does that really mean for UC? I don't have to run to the bathroom any longer, no more bleeding (yeah!!!), no more cramping or bloating...but I do not have normal bowel movements yet...mostly loose...it is frustrating. I drink a lot of water and some juice and vegetable juices to make up for the loss of fluids.
How are your constant symptoms even though you are "better"? I would really appreciate answers/responses! And how long do your attacks last?
Thank you, Jutta

Remission is the period of time between flare ups, or when your symptoms are less severe.
Symptoms between flare ups, or while you are feeling "better" vary according to the individual's severity of the disease, their diet, their stress level, and compliance with their medication during flare ups and remission periods.

I've also wondered what remission is.  I have times that are really bad, but I've never been symptom free in my 3 years with UC.  40 painful BM's/day vs 6-8 when I'm better.    My really bad days only last a couple days and I've been lucky to stay out of the hospital.

As for your problem, if you are in remission, you might try fiber to add some mass?
